A refined, smooth and even skin texture is a reflection of healthy skin. But sometimes, the skin goes through periods of stress and experiences irregularities making it grainy and uneven. What are the causes of a uneven skin texture and how to refine it to reveal its shine?

We explain everything to you!

First, what is uneven skin texture?

Uneven skin texture can be recognized by touch, with a rough and grainy texture visible to the eye. This problem affects combination or oily skin more because one of the reasons for an uneven skin texture is excess sebum which clogs the pores, promoting the formation of comedones, which subsequently causes this grainy appearance.

Here are the most common characteristics of uneven skin texture:

  • dilated pores and blackheads,
  • pimples (red and white) and blemishes,
  • roughness and rough appearance,
  • shine due to excess sebum,
  • pigment spots,
  • dull and faded complexion.

Causes of uneven skin texture

Skin is subject to many factors that have a distinctive impact on its structure and texture, including:

  • Age: With aging, the skin produces less collagen and elastin, which leads to a loss of elasticity and tone, thus impacting its texture. ( Discover our tips for naturally stimulating collagen production )
  • exposure to the sun's UV rays: the sun damages the surface layer of the epidermis, altering its texture,
  • poor lifestyle: an unbalanced diet, dehydration, insomnia, smoking and alcohol,
  • unsuitable facial routine: bad products, cleansing and makeup removal,
  • Overproduction of sebum causes pores to become clogged.
  • hormonal cycle, stress and pollution.

How to refine uneven skin texture: our advice

1. Refine skin texture by cleansing your face morning and evening

To remove impurities, excess sebum and traces of makeup, thoroughly cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type, which does not irritate the epidermis and does not cause excess sebum production.

You can also do what is called double cleansing to get rid of impurities deep down.

In the morning, you can use just a toning lotion, floral water or hydrosol to refresh the skin without affecting the hydrolipidic film.

2. Refine skin texture by moisturizing it

Hydration is essential for protecting and nourishing the skin. It's a step that shouldn't be overlooked, no matter your skin type.

The goal here is to rebalance your hydrolipidic film. Therefore, choose a day and night cream with a light texture and non-comedogenic nourishing ingredients to hydrate the skin, protect it from external aggressions, and regulate sebum production.

Opt for products containing hyaluronic acid, given their ability to retain water in the epidermis, which guarantees prolonged hydration.

3. Refine skin texture by exfoliating for a unified appearance

Once or twice a week, gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells and impurities, and unclog pores. Choose a scrub that suits your skin type and won't be harsh. Either:

  • a fine or coarse grain mechanical scrub depending on your skin's sensitivity. It's suitable for combination and oily skin. Baking soda will do the trick if you're looking for an affordable alternative.
  • A grain-free enzyme scrub . These are exfoliants based on fruit acids or AHAs. They help remove dead skin cells and dirt without the risk of opening blackheads or pimples. A grain-free enzyme scrub is ideal for acne-prone and blemish-prone skin.

Exfoliation is applied to clean, cleansed skin, followed by a moisturizer to soothe and restore it. Exfoliated skin is better able to regenerate and benefit the most from the skincare products applied to it.

4. Refine skin texture by deeply purifying it

For even more satisfying results, apply a purifying mask after your scrub. This helps deeply detoxify the skin to restore its softness and radiance.

A mask with white clay, charcoal or masks based on zinc and copper are excellent for gently purifying the epidermis and refining its texture.

Trick : for greater effectiveness, apply your mask after a steam bath of around 10 minutes to open the pores and facilitate the extraction of impurities.

5. Refine skin texture by tightening enlarged pores

This is a step that will drastically improve texture and refine skin texture. Visible pores are often caused by hyperseborrhea (excess sebum) and collagen loss, which leads to a loss of elasticity. The steps shared in this article—cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing—are super effective at getting rid of this excess sebum and tightening enlarged pores.

Another trick to incorporate into your daily facial routine is using cold. Cold is known to tighten pores, refine skin texture, and provide an instant glow. There are several ways to use cold, including:

  • use ice cubes covered with a cloth and apply it to the skin,
  • use an Ice Roller for a refreshing facial massage,
  • Rinse your face with cold water.
