“How long does it take to see an improvement in my acne scars after microneedling?” is one of the most common questions we get asked before booking a first session at ssskin!

Today, you will get a clear answer on how long it really takes to work, as well as discussing the factors that influence the results and, above all, what you can do to optimize each session.

What is microneedling?

To put it simply, microneedling is a technique that helps the skin to self-repair by creating tiny micro-channels on the surface of the epidermis without going beyond the first layers of the skin, using a device with fine needles (a manual dermaroller or an electric dermapen).

Once these micro-injuries are created, the skin renews itself faster by stimulating the natural regeneration of the skin and produces more collagen and elastin, two essential proteins in repairing skin marked by acne scars.

How long does it take to see results on acne scars?

Microneedling results evolve in stages or gradually. From the first session and up to 6 months of treatment, you will see a visible and stabilized transformation.

From the 1st session (2 to 4 weeks): no effect on scars

After the first microneedling session, the skin appears slightly smoother to the touch with a visible glow due to increased microcirculation. But as for the appearance of scars, it will take a little longer. The skin may also show some minor flaking. These are not yet spectacular results, but they are encouraging signs that skin cells are beginning to renew themselves.

After 2 to 3 sessions (1 to 2 months): the first visible improvements

After a series of 2 to 3 microneedling sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, the skin begins to appear more even, and the scar outlines become less distinct, as if "blurred", and deep depressions begin to fill in, a sign that collagen synthesis has been triggered and is starting to take effect.

After 4 to 6 sessions (3 to 5 months): noticeable results

At this stage, a real difference begins to be seen for moderate to deep acne scars. The skin has had time to produce a significant amount of collagen, to renew itself, and deep acne scars are reduced by 50 to 70% according to some studies. Even post-acne pigmentation spots fade.

6 months and beyond: continuous improvement

Collagen production continues up to 6 months after the last session; thus, some scars can become almost invisible, especially the more superficial ones.

What factors influence the speed of results?

Several factors can affect how quickly microneedling results are visible on acne scars. Some of them include:

  1. The type of acne scars: atrophic, deeper scars take longer to fade than pigmented scars, which are often more superficial.

  2. The age of the scars: the older and more severe a scar, the more time and sessions it takes to respond to microneedling.

  3. Age and skin quality: results are faster on young, dense skin that produces enough collagen.

  4. The frequency and regularity of sessions: a regular rhythm and an adequate number of sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is essential to optimize the cumulative effects of the treatment.

  5. Post-microneedling care: the skin continues to regenerate after each session. Therefore, it is essential to adopt a routine that supports and accelerates the results.

How many microneedling sessions are needed to treat acne scars?

To effectively treat acne scars with microneedling, plan for between 3 and 6 sessions. For mild to moderate scars, 2 to 4 sessions are often enough to smooth skin texture, reduce indentations, and even out skin tone. For deep, old, or very noticeable scars, expect between 5 and 6 sessions.

Can microneedling results be accelerated?

Yes, it is entirely possible to accelerate the effects of microneedling on acne scars:

By following an adapted post-treatment routine. After microneedling, the skin is more receptive, and this is the ideal time to promote regeneration: by using moisturizing and healing care products (rich in hyaluronic acid, peptides, or centella asiatica), by avoiding irritating products (acids, retinol) for at least 5 to 7 days, and finally by applying SPF 50 sunscreen daily to prevent hyperpigmentation.

By maintaining a regular schedule of sessions. Regularly spaced treatment optimizes and accelerates results. It is recommended to have 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

By combining microneedling with other clinic treatments. Microneedling + PRP or Microneedling + LED to boost collagen production and accelerate skin repair.

FAQ - Microneedling and acne scars: what you need to know

Can results be seen from the first sessions?

Yes, lighter or pigmented scars can fade visibly from the first use, unlike deep scars which require more treatments.

Does microneedling eliminate all acne scars?

No, microneedling does not eliminate all acne scars, but it significantly improves the appearance of indented scars (ice pick, boxcar, rolling) and post-acne pigmentation spots.

Is it painful?

Microneedling can be slightly uncomfortable, but not truly painful, especially when an anesthetic cream is applied before the session.

How long does redness last?

Redness generally lasts between 24 and 72 hours after a microneedling session. Slight flaking or a warm sensation may also appear in the following days.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Yes, microneedling can be combined with other treatments to maximize results against acne scars, such as PRP, LED, and peeling.
